Whoop strap and whoop battery pack

If you’re an enthusiast athlete, bodybuilder, or someone serious about maintaining good health, then the Whoop doesn’t need any formal introduction. This optical HR strap has gained massive praise in recent times for offering impressive fitness solutions, which traditional fitness trackers couldn’t manage. But, just like any other smart wearable device, the Whoop needs an electrical charge to track your fitness. For that reason, you need to learn how to charge Whoop to enjoy all its benefits.

Now, the Whoop strap is a fascinating device that comes as part device and part platform. This device offers a simple yet advanced way of fitness tracking. The Whoop strap is available in different versions with the Whoop 4.0 being the latest version.

So, with that said, whether you’ve recently subscribed to Whoop or you’re having a lot of unanswered questions regarding Whoop’s battery and charging process, this short guide will discuss everything you need to know regarding this sophisticated technology.

So, What is Whoop?

Now, if you happen to look at this device for the first time, it’s easy to confuse it with a Smartwatch like the Apple Watch. In fact, everything looks similar to a Smartwatch only that it doesn’t have a display. To those who thought it was a design flaw, Whoop doesn’t have a screen as it’s not designed to display anything.

Instead, it’s designed to monitor and track your fitness by focusing on a set of metrics that are affected by your level of activity. But, to achieve all these, Whoop doesn’t come alone. Instead, it comes as a combination of a Whoop band and an app/platform.

While the Whoop band is worn on the wrist, the app is responsible for tracking your daily activities. Once it tracks your activities, the Whoop app generates data that tells you which areas you need to work on. So, if you’re an athlete, the Whoop platform will notify you on when to go harder on your workouts and when to slow down.

Now, in most cases, the Whoop band + app measures two key things—recovery and load. Recovery is the rate of sleep, also referred to as resting heart rate (RHR) while load is the amount of workload/activities done each day, also referred to as heart rate variability (HRV).

So, unlike other wearables that show you the time, track your steps and offer other entertainment goodies, the Whoop band is only designed to give you recommendations on how hard you should work out to meet your fitness goals.

That Said, What’s in the Box?

All items that come with whoop

Now that you’re aware of what a Whoop band is, we’re now going to discuss just a little bit about what to expect in the box when buying this fitness tracking device.

So, once the package is unzipped, you’ll be welcomed with several components that include a charging pod, a short micro-USB charging cable, a band with a Whoop pod attached, and a carry pouch.

If you’re an athletic person, such as a weight lifter, you can decide to get a bicep band to help you move the Whoop pod from your wrist to your biceps. This will allow you to track accurate data when performing high-intensity workouts.

Whoop: The Basics

Now, before we discuss how to charge your Whoop battery pack, let’s first understand the basics of this fitness tracking device. Just as we mentioned earlier, a Whoop strap is a simple band that has an optical heart rate sensor. Since it doesn’t have a display or any buttons, it’s equipped with a sensor, which when tapped allows the band to pair with a Smartphone.

  • The Materials

About the material, a Whoop strap is made from a combination of different materials to make it comfortable, strong, and durable.

The strap itself features a stretchy knit band with an anti-slip rubber grip and special anti-sweat filaments. The main pod is made of matte plastic while the clasp is metallic.

Underneath the Whoop wrap (the area that gets to contact with your skin), you’ll find the optical heart rate sensor with three LEDs attached to it. The Green LED means the Whoop wrap is tracking your heart rate while the White/Red LEDs display the battery and device pairing status.

  • The Dimensions

When it comes to the dimensions, the Whoop strap has a sleek size that measures just 0.375-inches. It weighs 0.64 ounces without the battery pack and 1.16 ounces with the battery pack attached.

  • Waterproof Ratings

Since you’re expected to wear the Whoop strap at all times, there are times when it might get wet especially when bathing, doing the laundry, washing the dishes, or when it’s raining.

So, to avoid damaging the sensor and the battery pack, the Whoop strap is IP68 dustproof and water-resistant up to 10 meters for 2 hours, for the sensor, and 1 meter for the battery pack.

  • Putting On Your Whoop Band

In case it’s your first time wearing the Whoop strap, chances are high you might be wondering how exactly to put it on. Thankfully, Whoop’s support has discussed a simple process you can use to wear this device.

So, first, you need to open the clasp to loosen the band. Next, slide the strap onto your wrist and close the clasp to make it tight. According to Whoop, the Whoop strap should be worn on the non-dominant wrist and at least 1-inch away from your wrist bone.

What Are the Uses of the Whoop Strap?

Just as we mentioned at the beginning of our discussion, Whoop is a combination of an arm strap and an app/platform. When the two are combined, you’re left with a well-organized and intuitive platform that has a couple of uses.

Also, we mentioned that the Whoop strap doesn’t have a display or buttons. Instead, it’s paired with your Smart device to display data in four main sections—the Overview, Strain, Recovery, and Sleep. So, what are the various uses of Whoop?

  • Tracks Your Daily Activities: Now, Whoop measures your daily cardiovascular load, such as how much you’ve worked on a given day, and indicates the data in form of strain metrics (at a score of 0-21).

In most cases, scoring 18 and above indicates a near-maximal workout while a score of 18-14 indicates a strenuous workout. 14-10 is a moderate workout while anything below 10 is considered a light or minimal workout.

  • Tracks Your Recovery: Another use of Whoop is to track your recovery. Now, recovery is a measure of how prepared or how well your body is to deal with strain such as extreme exercises, illness, and stress. Measured in a score of 1-100%, Whoop calculates your recovery by tracking your sleep, your heart rate variability (HRV), resting heart rate (RHR), and the activities in your nervous system.

  • Measures Sleep Performance: Lastly, Whoop is used to track and measure your sleep performance using a scale of 0-100%. With the help of the Whoop app, you can track the duration of time you’ve spent in bed, your sleep efficiency, how long you took to fall asleep (latency), and the number of disturbances you’ve had throughout the night.

Charging the Whoop Battery Pack

Now, according to Whoop, the Whoop battery pack has a battery life that lasts approximately 4-5 days. Since it’s designed to track your daily activities at all times, you need to keep track of the battery status to ensure that it doesn’t get depleted. So, here are a few steps on how to charge the Whoop battery pack.

  1. Step One: So, the first thing you need to do before charging your Whoop battery pack is to confirm its status. To do that, you need to double-tap the top of the strap to observe the LEDs. Here’s an LED status scale you can consider.
  • 3 solid White LEDs = Full Charge
  • 2 White solid + 1 White blinking LED = 80-99%
  • 2 solid White LEDs = 60-79%
  • 1 solid White LED + 1 White blinking = 40-59%
  • 1 solid White LED: 20-39%
  • 1 White LED blinking = 10-19%
  • 1 solid Red LED = 5-9%
  • 1 blinking Red LED = 5%

Alternatively, you can check the battery status by opening the Overview screen in your Whoop mobile app using your Smartphone.

  1. Step Two: Once you’re sure about the battery status, the next step is to charge the battery pack. To do that, simply plug your battery pack into the available micro USB and allow it to charge for around 90-120 minutes. When the battery pack is fully charged, an LED light will switch from Red to Green.
  • Step Three: Once the battery pack is fully charged, finalize the process by plugging your fully charged battery pack back to the Whoop strap. When sliding the fully charged battery pack back to the strap, make sure the Whoop logos on the battery and the strap are aligned.

Conclusion

As you can see, there’s a lot to talk about regarding this fitness tracker. Its interface and fitness tracking techniques are impressive. But, just like any other smart wearable, a Whoop strap uses a battery pack that must be recharged to keep the Whoop strap alive.
